Kapparatota is a small village in the Divisional Secretariat Division of Weligama in the Matara District. This small village was completely ruined by the tidal waves of the tsunami disaster.

The Urban Council of Weligama has been using 18 acres of land in Kapparatota area as a dump yard for the solid waste of the Weligama City. The Urban Council with the assistance of Caritas SED-Galle decided to install a garbage recycling project inclusive of a waste managing system to minimize the pollution in this city. Further it was decided to setup a model farm using 4 acres of the same land for the production of organic compost manure. Caritas SED-Galle provided more than 2,000 seeds/plants worth about Rs.45,000/= to be grown in this land. The produce of this is to be sold to the public at the gate.

It was the intention of Caritas SED-Galle to mobilize this project as an exhibition center for the home gardeners, farmers and school children in the area in manufacturing compost fertilizer to be used in their home gardens.

At present one huller machine is being used fulltime for the manufacture of compost. At the moment the production is insufficient to meet the consumer demand. They have the capacity and sufficient materials for the use of another huller machine. Hence, it is requested from Caritas SED-Galle to assist them for the installation of another machine to increase their production to meet the requirements.

Each day, 10 MT of solid waste is brought to the site. There it is required to sort out different varieties of solid waste for their production for which a store room is required. They do not have a proper place either to store their produce of manure before they are packed into bags. There are 45 employees serving this project but do not have a suitable place for them to rest, have their meals or to change their clothes. In order to overcome all these requirements it is intended to construct a suitable building.

At present the sale of compost manure and the produce in the farm is being sold in the yard itself. In order to make the sales convenient it is proposed to construct a sales center and a green house at the entrance to the complex.

Future Plans:

Caritas SED-Galle has proposed to introduce a method of collecting different types of waste in different color bags to be issued to each house within the city so, that the sorting of different varieties of waste in the production center could be done away.
